"Behind the Skates: An Interview with Leonie Simpson – The Heart and Soul of Logan City Speed"

Interview with Club Treasurer Leonie Simpson – The Heart Behind Logan City Speed

Leonie Simpson has been a dedicated part of the roller sports community for quite some time. As Logan City Speed’s Treasurer, she plays a vital role in keeping the club running smoothly, all while supporting her son in his skating journey. Her passion and commitment go beyond just numbers—she’s an essential part of the club’s success and a driving force behind its strong sense of community. We sat down with Leonie to learn more about what keeps her motivated and why she loves being involved in the sport.

Q: Leonie, you’ve been involved in roller sports for quite a while now. What first brought you into the world of speed skating?

All my kids have skated from a young age.  Raiden became interested in Speed when he saw some speed skaters doing a demo at a social session and here we still are!

Q: As a parent, watching your son grow and succeed in the sport must be incredibly rewarding. What does it mean to you to support his journey?

I am incredibly proud of the dedication and effort that Raiden has put into his sport.  Seeing him achieve the results of that hard work makes it worth all the sacrifices.

Q: On top of being a dedicated parent, you also take on the important role of Treasurer. What do you enjoy most about helping the club behind the scenes?

I am very grateful to be able to help the club that has supported my kids and others and being able to give something back is important for me.

Q: Running a club takes a lot of work, and you’re always involved in making things happen. What keeps you motivated to continue giving your time and effort?

I’m a compulsive volunteer!  If I see something that I think needs to be done, I try to help make it happen.

Q: What do you love most about speed skating and the community at Logan City Speed?

Logan City Speed is more like a family than a club.  Everyone supports and helps each other and we all pitch in to get things done and have fun doing it.  I love being part of this family.

Q: Supporting an athlete, especially your own child, is a big commitment. What advice would you give to other parents who are just starting out in the sport?

That’s a tough one.  Every parent and athlete’s journey is different but I would say, just be encouraging and supporting  - of the athlete and the athlete’s community as much as you can.  Let the coaches do the coaching and reinforce the good habits where you can.

Q: Finally, after all these years of dedication, what’s the most rewarding part of being involved with the club?

Seeing the club grow and beginner skaters blossom into fantastic competitors and awesome humans is the most rewarding thing for me.  Being able to help support them all with the help of our fabulous volunteers is the best thing ever.

Leonie’s hard work, passion, and commitment help make Logan City Speed a place where skaters can thrive. We are incredibly grateful for all she does, and we thank her for everything she continues to contribute to the club!
